Ljubljana

Ljubljana, Slovenia based civic tech NGO, focusing efforts on (digital) political participation, open data, transparency, and public institutional oversight.

Danes je nov dan (Today is a new day) uses digital technology and the internet to create dialogue on public issues, facilitate participation and push for greater transparency. We are committed to promoting active citizen participation, civil society and raising public awareness on public affairs, protecting the commons and advocating for a transformation of the socio-political system for the good of society and nature. In 2019 we received the status of an NGO in public interest in the field of information society from the Government of Slovenia. In 2022 we received the Embassy Tulip Award from the Dutch Embassy in Slovenia for our work in the field of democracy. We are one of the four organisations that established and run the Legal Network for Protection of Democracy that received the European Citizen Award from the European Parliament in 2022.

Our work so far has been focused on developing online projects, tools and platforms for monitoring the work of elected representatives and democratic institutions (Parlameter, Odprti računi, Obljuba dela dolg, etc.), involvement in decision-making processes (Consul, Omnia map, etc.) and improving media literacy (Twitter Brigade 1.0 and 2.0, Newsgradient, Media Literacy interactive game etc. ). In addition, since 2012, we have carried out more than 80 digital communication campaigns, websites and mini games in which, through a user-friendly experience and with humor and innovative approaches, we draw attention to various socially important topics. We regularly cooperate with public entities, Slovenian and international NGOs, CSOs and the media organizations.

Our work primarily focuses on 4 pillars: 1) better democracy, 2) regulated use of digital technologies, 3) media transparency and literacy, 4) NGO sector support. Our team’s skill sets are tech oriented and all the code we produce is open sourced. We are committed to promoting and developing the civic tech sector as we believe it is vital for a functional democracy. In the recent years we have also increased our capacities in the fields of regulating AI development and tackling disinformation which we have identified as highly important and aligned with our mission.
