The Energia Foundation's work centers around organizing large-scale demonstrations, experiences, and proof-of-concept installations that can easily translate into organized institutions to create long-lasting, sustainable change.
Do protests work? Over the last century of movement building what we’ve learned is that they do… and don’t. Achieving long lasting change rarely stems from a rally, protest, or a March. Political change is slow and oftentimes impossible to execute on a quick timeline regardless of the precedent.
Additionally, injustice and oppression are oftentimes much more difficult to resolve than just through changes in one beuracratic weak point. You can end segregation, but that doesn’t prevent the long lasting effects of redlining. You can institute freedom of religion, but still have Muslim citizens in New York (and beyond) have their communications tapped post 9/11.
D2O or Demonstration-to-Organization Advocacy is an advocacy methodology based on boosting the efficacy of social, political, cultural, and economic change by harnessing the virality and timing of demonstrations, protests, and experiences, and transferring this energy to the creation of sustainable institutions that can work towards a common cause for the decades necessary to see large-scale change.
