Giving voters the option to vote NO in all elections can improve all democracies
It started in Taiwan in March, 2015 with the formation of the Negative Vote Association. https://www.negativevote.org/pagesen.html?lang=en
The reform idea is to give voters the option to vote either For or Against a candidate or a party in elections. Each voter still has only one vote. Each Against vote is counted as minus one. Winner is the person that gets higher net positive votes.
The reform is applicable to all election systems, including FPTP, RCV, Proportional Representation.
It will increase voter participation for sure and we have done 21 election surveys over last 10 years to prove it. This impact, by itself, would be already an important contribution to democracy.
Further more, this will reduce polarization and contribute to world peace. Because each voter still has only one vote, loyal partisan voters will vote YES for the party nominee. It's the middle electorate who are more likely to vote NO, and will vote against the extremists. The increased participation from the middle can change the outcome of a tight race. Therefore in all future elections, candidates must move toward the center. The worst, the extremists will not win.
You can help by: 1. pass on the idea to increase awareness, 2. conduct your own local election surveys to show the impact: what if Negative Vote/Balanced Ballot is available. 3. Organize your own local group to implement this reform in your community, 4. Join us and help us with our work to raise money, hire staff, conduct more election surveys, and implement legislative reform through referendums.
