Landlord database & interactive map to promote property ownership transparency in rental markets
Landlord Mapper is a civic tech initiative aimed at helping tenants research their landlords, and helping tenant organizers organize cross-building tenant unions. The intiative seeks to address the obscurity of property ownership in American cities through the creation of landlord-linked property datasets, and a web application connected to that database allowing users to research the owner of rental properties in their city.
The tool is aimed primarily at the renter class and tenant organizers who are interested in who their landlord is, and in the case of tenant organizers what other buildings they own so that they can engage in cross-building union organizing campaigns. It also aims to help researchers engaged in data analysis related to rental markets and land ownership inequality, along with investigative journalists researching specific landlords.
WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR FUNDING! We are crowdfunding this effort via Patreon, however we're also actively seeking grants to support the continued development of our database and web application.
Beyond financial support, the biggest way for folks to help is to work with us to get the data for their city. Given the nature of municipal data collection, every city's property data is different and therefore special attention is required for each city. If folks are interest in seeing their city's data up and live in our app, please don't hesitate to reach out!
