The number of people (size of a crowd) at a protest or march is seen as an indicator of its success, and a proxy indicator for general public support of the cause. As a result, these figures are hotly contested, with often unreliable estimates provided by authorities and/or protest organizers themselves. New technologies promise to provide more empirical counts.
